Microsoft publishes an unscheduled Windows 11 update that eliminates difficulties with office programs in virtualized environments. However, the patch comes with an already known problem.

Microsoft fixes office problems with an urgent update

Microsoft has released an unscheduled update for Windows 11 version 24H2 that fixes critical problems with office applications in virtualized environments. The update KB5068221 (OS Build 26100.6588) addresses an error, which occurred through a double handle closure in the system components Appventem Subsystems32 or Appevent subsystems64.

The problem affects companies that use Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) to provide office applications. App-V is a technology that makes it possible to virtualize applications and manage it centrally without having to install them locally on any client computer. This solution is particularly valued in corporate environments because it simplifies the software distribution and avoids conflicts between different application versions.

Loud Microsoft the double handle closure in the app V-subsystem represents a significant compatibility problem for organizations that provide office via app-V. The update KB5068221 therefore functions as a highly prioritized compatibility fix, which reduces the help of the help of office vatings in app-v sessions.

    Comprehensive improvements and AI updates

The out-of-band update is cumulative and includes all safety fixes and improvements from the nine September 2025 Patch Day Update (KB5065426). In addition, the update brings with it various improvements for AI components. The image Search component was updated to version 1,2508,906.0, as was content extraction, semantic analysis and settings model.

These AI updates are not installed on conventional Windows PCs or Windows server systems because you need special hardware requirements of the Copilot+platform. Otherwise, quality improvements were made at the Servicing Stack, which is responsible for the installation of Windows updates. The Servicing Stack is a critical component that ensures that updates can be properly downloaded, validated and installed.

    Known problems and transitional solutions

However, the update also brings with it a well -known problem. After installation, connection problems to shared files and folders can occur via the SMBV1 protocol on NetBIOS via TCP/IP if either the SMB client or server installed the update from September 2025. The SMBV1 protocol dates from the 1980s and is now considered outdated and unsafe. Microsoft had already started to deactivate SMBV1 by default with Windows 10 version 1709.

Incidentally, modern provisions with the newer protocol versions SMBV2 or SMBV3 are not affected by the problem. As a transitional solution, administrators can allow network traffic to TCP-Port 445, which automatically switches the Windows SMB connection to TCP instead of NETBT. This circumvents the problem with NetBIOS via TCP/IP, while the functionality is preserved.

    Update installation

The current out-of-band update is not installed automatically via Windows Update, as it is a special scenario. Administrators can get the patch from the Microsoft Update Catalog download and import manually. This procedure is typical of emergency updates that specifically address certain problems in specific environments.
