Singapore defence ministry has confirmed plans to purchase four Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, intended to replace its ageing Fokker-50 maritime patrol fleet.
The Singapore Armed Forces’ (SAF) has been operating the Fokker-50s since 1993.

The acquisition marks the initial stage in the SAF strategy to refresh its maritime security “to strengthen the SAF’s maritime situation awareness and ability to counter sub-surface threats,” the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said on 10 September.
The P-8A Poseidon, a variant of the P-8 platform, is also used by naval forces globally, including the US, the UK, Australia, Norway, New Zealand, and South Korea. It is developed based on the Boeing 737-800 commercial aircraft.
Designed for multi-role maritime patrols, the aircraft performs a broad range of operations from search and rescue to anti-submarine warfare.
With a service ceiling of 41,000ft and a top speed of 490 knots, the P-8A boasts long-range capabilities and an aerial refuelling system that extends its patrol duration over large bodies of water.
The aircraft can support both military and humanitarian missions.
In July 2025, the US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) received the first refurbished P-8A Poseidon aircraft from L3Harris under multi-year maintenance, repair and overhaul contract.
Globally, the P-8 fleet has surpassed 660,000 flight hours across more than 172 aircraft either delivered or in active service.
Each unit is built to endure 25 years or 25,000 flight hours under demanding maritime conditions, said Boeing.
Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing said production has begun on the 20 F-35 aircraft on order, with deliveries scheduled to commence from late 2026.
