The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has contracted Swedish defence company Saab for the supply of an additional AUV62-AT, an autonomous anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training target.

Previously, in 2020, the RAN initiated the acquisition of a new anti-submarine training system to enhance its combat capabilities, leading to the integration of the AUV62-AT from Saab Australia into its operations.

The AUV62-AT is an autonomous underwater vehicle designed to mimic submarines, torpedoes, or uncrewed vehicles for training purposes.

Weighing 800kg and capable of operating at depths of up to 300 metres, the vehicle is employed by naval forces globally.

The platform serves as a cost-effective substitute for live submarines in diverse training scenarios without sacrificing the quality of the exercises.

The AUV62-AT is equipped with features such as communications software and mission evaluation tools, enabling it to be launched and recovered from both ships and shorelines.

Saab states that training programmes can be customised to address various requirements, which expedites the learning process and boost the operational effectiveness of the Royal Australian Navy.

Saab Australia managing director Andy Keough said: “The AUV62-AT is part of Saab’s extensive range of technology enabled training solutions designed to provide realistic scenarios to enhance combat skills and preparedness.”

The system serves as a training target for anti-submarine warfare assets, including surface, aerial, and underwater units, in various configurations.

It is programmable to facilitate training complexities, from fundamental to advanced levels.

Additionally, the system enables the extension and intensification of training sessions without the need for actual submarines or additional resources.
