The Los Angeles Rams entered the 2026 season as heavy favorites to win the Super Bowl at +500.
Now, after a 27-7 blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia, the Rams’ Super Bowl odds have dropped from +500 to +600. The 20-point defeat marked the largest Week 1 loss by a preseason Super Bowl favorite in recorded history, with odds data available for the past 50 seasons.
Over the past 30 years, the preseason Super Bowl favorite has entered the season at +500 or shorter 20 times. None of those 20 teams went on to win the Super Bowl.
The Rams are trying to snap that trend in 2026, but a blowout loss in Week 1 certainly wasn’t the start they were looking for.

The Favorites Fall: After extending reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, trading for Myles Garrett, and acquiring Trent McDuffie earlier this offseason, the Rams weren’t finished. They pried Aaron Donald out of retirement after he sat the last two seasons, and now, they are as loaded as can be. Donald is not only a three-time DPOY, but he made the Pro Bowl in each of his 10 professional seasons, and was a first-team All-Pro member eight times. However, Los Angeles got off to a nightmare start in 2026. The blowout loss marked the fewest points the Rams have scored in a game started by Matthew Stafford (75 games). And things weren’t much better on the defensive side of the ball. Myles Garrett failed to record a sack or a tackle for just the fourth time in his entire career, making for a nightmare debut with the Rams.
49ers Rise: After injuries kept the 49ers from reaching greater heights in 2025, they got off to a dream start against their division rival. As a result, San Francisco’s odds to hoist the Lombardi Trophy jumped from +1900 to +1400. With the win, Kyle Shanahan improved to 12-8 against Sean McVay, including the playoffs. That’s the most wins by any head coach against McVay, with no other coach recording more than five. The long flight back to San Francisco just got a little more enjoyable as the 49ers begin their push for their first Super Bowl title since 1995.
